Kenny's Fur Family

Every so often, someone will ask us about our own pets. Over the next little while, we plan to share our stories.

Kennedy first met Nevaeh when she was four months old. At the time, Parker (her brother) had a bucket list he wanted to complete, and one of the items on the list was to get a puppy. They contacted so many people with ads online and only one person responded. They handed over this lanky, uncoordinated puppy who hadn’t grown into her body yet.

Nobody knew what Parker would name her, but it was assumed it would be after his favourite hockey player (Drew Doughty, a defenceman for the L.A. Kings) or something like that. Instead, he picked ‘Nevaeh’ because it was Heaven backwards and that’s where he was going. He was terminally ill with cancer and it was one of his wishes that he would have a puppy who would become a therapy dog. At one-and-a-half years old, Nevaeh accomplished that feat! She now visits MacGregor Elementary School, Red River College, assisted living facilities and other support centres.

Nevaeh will be 4 on May 2nd. She is certified in Novice/Intermediate trick classes and her current favourite trick is laying down and crossing her paws. She’s eager to learn so it can be difficult to teach her new tricks sometimes, but it makes it all the more worthwhile when she succeeds! Another goal is to have her do some agility training in the future. We will let you know how that goes.

Nevaeh is a cuddler. Every morning, she jumps into bed between Kennedy and her fiancee Eric to get double the pets and cuddles! She loves going for walks and playing with the laser pointer. This is very convenient because of another furry family member.

Traeh (heart backwards) is turning three-years-old on May 2nd (same birthday as Nevaeh!) and is a black cat with long black hair. Yes, they match! Traeh was adopted from the Portage Animal Welfare Society and was known as TJ back then.

She enjoys chasing the laser pointer and being chased by Nevaeh. She is also a cuddler and enjoys hiding. (You can find her under the couch or under the table. If you reach for her, she will playfully swat at you. She is a very playful cat!) She is a big fan of treats and will come running the moment she hears that bag shake.

That is Kennedy’s fur family! Tell us about your fur family by sending us a message on Instagram or on Facebook. We’d love to highlight some of your stories in the future.
