“What’s the story, Wishbone?”

Earlier this year, we asked our staff about their favourite dogs in film. As we looked at the most famous dogs on the silver screen, we started thinking about the small screen. It didn’t take a lot of searching to find out about a children’s show from the late 90’s. Some of us had never heard of it while some of our friends remember it fondly. After all, for many children at the time, it was one of the inspirations to pick up a book for the first time!

Wishbone starred Soccer the Dog, a Jack Russell Terrier who played the titular pup. Each episode of this PBS show would feature a different storyline that reminded Wishbone of a book. He would then imagine himself in that scenario, which allowed for some absolutely adorable costumes including Robin Hood, Sherlock Holmes and Rip Van Winkle. (We don’t know if this is where Kalie gets her ideas for costumes for Ryder, but it’s possible! Can someone create a new show that Ryder could star in? He’d be sooooo good! Maybe we should start making t-shirts just in case?)

The series was very well received when it first aired back in 1995 and the episodes still hold up today 26 years later. It ran for 40 episodes and featured some of the most popular works of literature ever, including the Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Oliver Twist, and Romeo and Juliet. Personally, we would love to see a show like this return in the future. Not only was Wishbone adorable, but we love educational shows that are also entertaining. If you haven’t seen this, look up some episodes on YouTube. It’s such a fun watch for kids and the theme song is very catchy. We apologize ahead of time for how much you’ll sing it.

If there was a show with an animal that you would love to see return or get rebooted, what would you pick? Is there a show you think we should watch that we may not have heard of? (We’ve all heard the theme song for ‘The Littlest Hobo’, but we’ve never seen a full episode…) Send us a message on social media and we will check it out.

As we continue looking for different blog ideas, we wonder how much you would like to read about some movies, TV shows, books and other types of media that star some of our favourite animals. Would you want to learn more about some of your favourite stories or maybe learn about a story you’ve never heard about before?

As the Wishbone theme song goes, “What’s the story, Wishbone? Do you think it’s worth a look?”

Check out the theme song here.
